For the last few years, IMCD has been working across business groups to develop a Sustainable Solutions program for our customers that is consistent with industry best practices. Read on to uncover the latest on the program.

What is the aim of the Sustainable Solutions programme?

The programme aims to make it simpler and faster for customers to access information on sustainability and find the right products. Think of it as a "one-stop shop" for sustainable solutions.

How are these solutions categorized?

Each business group defines categories relevant to its market and customer needs. For Coatings and Construction, for example, we’ve identified six categories, ranging from circular and renewable solutions to performance-driven ones like durability and energy savings. This structure helps us classify our portfolio and identify sustainable solutions effectively.

With this approach, we find that simplicity is key. But we also maintain rigour. Each category has defined subcategories, criteria, and required proof documentation to ensure transparency and reliability.

How is the programme organized within IMCD?

The sustainability team includes representatives from technical, marketing, sales, and digital functions to ensure a cross-functional approach. We also have regional representatives from the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and EMEA to account for global perspectives and regulations.

Defining the categories and criteria involved intense discussions, but now we feel confident in what we’ve created and are engaging more actively with both our suppliers and customers.

When working with suppliers, how do you approach the evaluation process?

First, we review the portfolio internally to identify products that meet our sustainability criteria. This involves gathering documentation and conducting a "negative signal" check to ensure no product has regulatory restrictions or significant environmental or health risks. Once we’re satisfied, we engage the suppliers for alignment and sign-off.

So far, our supplier feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many suppliers appreciate IMCD’s efforts and, in some cases, are even stricter in their sustainability criteria than we are. It’s inspiring to see their commitment.

How can customers access this programme?

Customers can start by contacting their sales representative to get tailored advice or even formulation support. We’re also integrating this information into our digital sales tools for easier access. Over time, we aim to provide more self-service options. Whether they need data for life cycle assessments, product recommendations, or technical support, we’re here to help. We want to encourage open conversations and collaboration to meet their specific needs.

Our goal at IMCD is to set the stage for meaningful partnerships through this programme, and the more we engage, the better we can support our customers and drive sustainability together.
